Empowerment through theatre® Training for Medical professionals

about the research

Research shows that collaborative efforts between medicine and theater are effective in teaching clinical empathy techniques, which allows medical professionals to better understand the unique needs of each child and family.

ETT™has helped many medical professionals better engage the children and families in their care. These medical professionals have all participated in ETT™ training to improve their skills in being present, active listening, and active empathy, all components of high-quality care.  New research in psychotherapy also suggests that role-play and modeling techniques, essential components of ETT™ training, are critical to providing medical professionals training in evidence-based care.

About the Training

  • Customized to meet your organization's needs; training sessions range from 4 to 18 hours
  • Training is geared toward doctors, especially pediatricians, primary care physicians, and psychiatrists, medical residents, clinical and school psychologists, and other medical professionals, including nurse practitioners and social workers, counselors, and parent advocates / family support specialists
  • Patient intake skills are evaluated for comparison, pre- and post-training;
  • Teaches three primary skills (and subset of skills):  being present, active listening, and active empathy;
  • Experiential learning through role-plays (e.g. living lives of many characters) insures skills are learned and used in practice after training.
The teaching method should be experiential -- as it has been shown conclusively that instructional methods do not give the desired results (Aspegren 1999).
