about parent advocates
We provide ETT™ training to parent advocates (who are also called family support specialists, or family peer advocates) in New York State. Parents play an important role in their child's treatment for physical and mental health issues. As such, parent advocates are often employed by hospitals, clinics or other community-based organizations to help parents of children who are in treatment for physical or mental health issues.
Parent advocates play an important role in helping to empower other parents, and to keep them active, engaged, and questioning in their child's treatment process. Research shows that empowered parents are more likely to seek and continue with services. |
DEFINITION OF PARENT ADVOCATEFamily peer advocates have ‘lived-experience’ as the parent (biological, foster, adoptive) or primary caregiver of a child with a social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, or developmental disability. They receive training to develop skills and strategies to empower and support other families. They foster effective parent professional partnerships and promote the practice of family-driven and youth-guided approaches. Family Peer Advocates may also provide a wide range of family support services in a variety of settings. Click here for a more detailed definition of family peer support services in New York State.
